Ak 47 Serial Number

by
I've got some interest in a Poly-Tech AK, but wanted to know if it's a pre/post ban rifle. It's in the hands of a person, so I want to find the specifics on it to be safe. Anyone know of a serial list for these?
If any of this helps, it's an under-folder, very nice looking, have the serial number. (PF-085##) The bottom stamp is 'KFS Atlanta' and has all wood furniture. From my limited knowledge of AKs, all KFS imports ended in the late 80s as underfolders. It's out of box, a little nicked on the furniture, he doesn't have a bayonet or anything he could find. (Rifle, sling, mags.) Obviously used, but no clue on how many rounds through it.
Just like to know what I'm getting and if it's worth it! Thanks!

This is a discussion on Norinco AK47 within the Collectors forums, part of the Firearm Forum category; I bought this rifle about ten years ago. Since the ban sunsetted I've wanted to take it back to pre-ban specs but haven't gotten around ..

One afternoon I came across this AK-47 looking weapon (see title photo above) and it had me scratching my head as to just what it was. It sure looked like an AK-47 model of some type but I had never seen one with half sheet metal and half milled receiver before.

  1. Sep 20, 2006ย  How to read AK Serial Numbers? Does any one know of a website that has a list of AK serial numbers or ranges in which you can find out about the build/type of build, the build date, etc.? I have found one but the only serials they discuss do not look like mine.
  2. May 06, 2010ย  Is there a way, based on the serial number, etc. To determine if an AK47 style rifle is preban? Google search results yield messages on other forums that reference researching serial numbers, but I didn't see anything that said how to research them.

Is yours a Mak 90? Finding a pre ban gas block and front sight, that will fit the Chinese AK, won't be easy.

Visually the main differance is the folding bayonet and the chromed bolt but the gas block is also differant. The front sight was ground down so the rear doesn't have the bayonet swivel.
The bolt on mine does not have the high degree of milling as the other parts on the rifle. This is because bolt was replaced in Sile, NY. This rifle was imported before the ban but not sold. That meant is could stay in the U.S. but had to have changes made before it could be sold. Stupid.

That's a great looking '47! Again, I like polymer- had a polymer AK and foolishly let it go, but I like the classic wood furniture on these bad boys. The bayonet is always a nice accent. Did you get around to taking it back to its pre-ban glory?

Certainly! It makes me want another AK. I know I have been looking at 22lr rifles, but I have a craving to get an AK back in my arsenal.. I need to keep saving. Plus, the SKS is lonely, HA! I love how yours looks. On the AK I did own, I wanted to change the polymer gear to wood.

I don't blame you. 7.62x39 use to be much, much cheaper. Now, it's affordable, but not 22lr affordable.
As far as the Norinco brand, how is the reliability, durability, barrel life, etc? I hear some say stay away from Chinese this or that, or your barrel needs to be chrome lined, etc. What's your take on this and your experience?

The fit and finish on your rifle is a lot better than the modern imports. The WASR 10 is the model that comes to mind the most interms of rough looking furniture.

If there is one thing the Chinese can make is a firearm. I think the Norinco is the gold standard of AK47's.
