List of Twin Peaks episodes

The third season of Twin Peaks, also known as Twin Peaks: The Return, consists of 18 episodes and premiered on Showtime on May 21, 2017.[1][2] Developed and written by creators David Lynch and Mark Frost,[3] the season is a continuation of the 1990–91 ABC series. An ensemble of returning and new cast members appear,[4] led by original star Kyle MacLachlan and directed by Lynch.[5]

Set 25 years after the events of the original Twin Peaks, the season follows multiple storylines, many of which are linked to FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper (MacLachlan) and his original 1989 investigation into the murder of Twin Peaks homecoming queen Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). In addition to the fictional Washington State town of Twin Peaks, the story extends to locations such as Las Vegas, South Dakota, Philadelphia, and New Mexico. Showtime president David Nevins said that 'the core of [the plot] is Agent Cooper's odyssey back to Twin Peaks'.[6]

The season garnered critical acclaim, with praise centering on its unconventional narrative and structure, visual invention, and performances.[7] Many publications, including Rolling Stone, The Washington Post, and Esquire, named it the best television show of 2017.[8] The film journals Sight & Sound and Cahiers du cinéma named The Return the second-best and best 'film' of the year respectively, sparking discussion about the artistic difference, if any, between theatrical film and TV series in the era of streaming.[9][10][11]

Production[edit]

Background and development[edit]

The first season of Twin Peaks premiered on April 8, 1990, on ABC. It was one of the top-rated series of 1990, but declining ratings led to its cancellation in 1991 after its second season. In subsequent years, Twin Peaks has often been listed among the greatest television dramas of all time.[12][13][14][15][16] A prequel film directed by Lynch, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, was released in 1992, but in 2001 stated that Twin Peaks was as 'dead as a doornail.'[17]

In 2007 artist Matt Haley began work on a graphic novel continuation, which he hoped would be included in the 'Complete Mystery' DVD box set. Twin Peaks producer Robert Engels agreed to help write it on the condition that Lynch and Frost approved the project; Haley said: '[Engels] and I had a number of discussions about what the story would be. I was keen to use whatever notes they had for the proposed third season. I really wanted this to be a literal 'third season' of the show.' Paramount Home Entertainment agreed to package it with the box set, also on the condition that Lynch and Frost approved. Though Frost approved the project, Lynch vetoed it, saying that he respected the effort but did not want to continue the story of Twin Peaks.[18]

In 2013 rumors that Twin Peaks would return were dismissed by Lynch's daughter Jennifer Lynch (author of The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer) as well as by Frost.[19] Cast member Ray Wise recounted what Lynch had said to him about a possible continuation: 'Well, Ray, you know, the town is still there. And I suppose it's possible that we could revisit it. Of course, [your character is] already dead.. but we could maybe work around that.'[20]

In January 2014 a casting call for a 'Twin Peaks promo', directed by Lynch, was revealed to be the filming of a featurette for the Twin Peaks: The Complete Mystery Blu-ray set.[21] In September 2014 Lynch answered a question about Twin Peaks at the Lucca Film Festival by saying it was a 'tricky question', and that 'there's always a possibility.. and you just have to wait and see.'[22]

Announcement[edit]

On October 6, 2014, Showtime announced that it would air a nine-episode miniseries written by Lynch and Frost and directed by Lynch.[23][24][25][26] Frost emphasized that the new episodes were not a remake or reboot but a continuation of the series. The episodes are set in the present day, and the passage of 25 years is an important element in the plot. As to whether the miniseries would become an ongoing series, Frost said: 'If we have a great time doing it and everybody loves it and they decide there's room for more, I could see it going that way.'[27]

In March 2015 Lynch expressed doubts about the production due to 'complications'. Showtime confirmed the season was moving forward, stating: 'Nothing is going on that's any more than any preproduction process with David Lynch. Everything is moving forward and everybody is crazy thrilled and excited.'[28] In April 2015 Lynch said he would not direct the nine episodes due to budget constraints.[29] He and Showtime came to an agreement, with Lynch confirming on May 15, 2015, that he would direct, and that there would be more episodes than the originally announced nine.[3] At a Twin Peaks panel in Seattle, cast members Sherilyn Fenn and Sheryl Lee said that the new season would consist of 18 episodes and Angelo Badalamenti would return as composer.[30]

Casting[edit]

On January 12, 2015, Kyle MacLachlan was confirmed to return to the series.[5] In October 2015 it was confirmed that Michael Ontkean, who portrayed Sheriff Harry S. Truman and has since retired from acting, would not return for the revival, and that the role of town sheriff would be filled by Robert Forster, later confirmed as playing Frank Truman, brother of Harry. Forster had been cast as Harry in the 1990 pilot but replaced by Ontkean due to scheduling issues.[31] Also in October David Duchovny teased his return as Agent Denise Bryson.[32] In November 2015 it was reported that Miguel Ferrer would reprise his role as Albert Rosenfield and that Richard Beymer and David Patrick Kelly would return as Benjamin Horne and Jerry Horne respectively.[33] In December 2015 Alicia Witt confirmed she would reprise her role as Gersten Hayward.[34]Michael J. Anderson was asked to reprise his role as The Man from Another Place but declined.[35]

Russ Tamblyn underwent open-heart surgery in late 2014 and was still recovering in 2015. Lynch and Frost still hoped Tamblyn would join the cast for the new season, which was later confirmed.[36] On September 28, 2015, Catherine E. Coulson, who reprised her role of the Log Lady in the new season,[37] died of cancer.[38] She filmed her final scene four days before her death.[4][39]

The season's first teaser trailer, released in December 2015, confirmed the involvement of Michael Horse (Tommy 'Hawk' Hill).[40] In January 2016 it was reported that Sherilyn Fenn would reprise her role as Audrey Horne in a 'major presence.'[41] In February 2016 it was reported that Lynch would reprise his role as Gordon Cole.[42] Frequent Lynch collaborator Laura Dern was cast in a 'top-secret pivotal role',[43] which eventually proved to be Diane, the previously unseen character to whom Cooper frequently dictated taped messages during the show's original run. In April 2016 a complete cast list was released, featuring 217 actors, with actors returning from the earlier series marked with asterisks.[44] Mary Reber, who plays Alice Tremond in the finale, is the actual owner of the house used for the Palmer residence.[45]

David Bowie was asked to make a cameo appearance as FBI Agent Phillip Jeffries, his character from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.[46] As Bowie's health was declining, his lawyer told Lynch that he was unavailable. Before his death in January 2016, Bowie gave the production permission to reuse old footage featuring him, but he was unhappy with the accent he had used in the film, and requested that he be dubbed over by an authentic Louisiana actor, leading to the casting of Nathan Frizzell as Jeffries's voice.[47] In January and February 2017, respectively, cast members Miguel Ferrer and Warren Frost died, but both appear in the new season.[48][49]Harry Dean Stanton, who reprised his role as Carl Rodd, died in September 2017, less than two weeks after the last episode of the season aired.[50]

Filming[edit]

In July 2015 Frost suggested that the season would premiere in 2017 rather than 2016, as originally planned.[51] The series began filming in September 2015 and Showtime president David Nevins said:

I decided to give you all my Updated Sims 3 Mods Folder along with my Sims 4 Mods Folder. Sims 3 no mods folder. Thank you all for the 1100+ Subscribers! I'm hoping we make 2016. It's not clear. It's ultimately going to be in [series co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost's] control.[52]
I don't know [how many episodes there will be]. They're going to decide, I expect it to be more than nine, but it's open-ended. I know what the shooting schedule is and then we'll have him cut into it however many episodes it feels best at.[53]

In January 2016 Nevins confirmed that the season would premiere in the first half of 2017.[54] The season was shot continuously from a single, long shooting script before being edited into episodes. Filming was completed by April 2016.[4]

Music[edit]

The season's score contains new and reused compositions by Angelo Badalamenti, dark ambient music and sound design by Dean Hurley and David Lynch (including some from The Air Is on Fire), and unreleased music from Lynch and Badalamenti's 1990s project Thought Gang, two of which previously appeared in Fire Walk with Me. Hurley's contributions were released on the album Anthology Resource Vol. 1: △△ on August 6, 2017, by Sacred Bones Records.[55] Several tracks from Johnny Jewel's album Windswept also appear throughout. Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima by Krzysztof Penderecki appears in key scenes.

Additionally, multiple episodes contain musical performances at the Roadhouse.[57] Lynch hand-picked several of the bands, including Nine Inch Nails, Sharon Van Etten, Chromatics, and Eddie Vedder.[58]Twin Peaks: Music from the Limited Event Series, an album containing many of these performances along with other songs heard on the season, was released by Rhino Records on September 8, 2017.[56]

A light above his colleague Anthony Sinclair spurs Cooper to accuse him of lying, angering Sinclair and their boss, Bushnell Mullins. The casino's owners, the Mitchum brothers, beat and fire a supervisor, believing him complicit in Cooper's winning streak. Car thieves trigger the bomb under Dougie's car. Jade drops Cooper's Great Northern Hotel room key in a mailbox. Becky and her jobless husband, Steven Burnett, snort drugs after borrowing money from Becky's mother, Shelly. Dr. Jacoby broadcasts conspiracy theories, watched by Jerry Horne and Nadine Hurley. At the Pentagon, Colonel Davis learns the headless corpse's fingerprints match those of Major Briggs. Knox arrives in Buckhorn and learns that Major Briggs's fingerprints come from a body in its forties, not seventies. Albert and Gordon convince Diane to speak to Cooper in prison. She is upset by the conversation and tells Gordon the man is not Cooper. Cooper's doppelgänger blackmails Warden Murphy into releasing him and Ray. Police visit Cooper at Dougie's workplace to question him about his destroyed car. As he leaves with Janey-E, Ike runs at them with a gun, but Cooper expertly disarms him while having a vision of the Arm. In Twin Peaks, the owner of the truck driven by Richard in the hit-and-run fails to arrive for a meeting with Andy. Beverly tries to locate the source of a hum in Ben Horne's office, then returns home to her terminally ill husband, Tom. A young man bursts into the RR, looking for Billy.

In a standoff, Ray shoots Cooper's doppelgänger. Woodsmen tear at his body, revealing an orb with BOB's face. Ray flees and informs Jeffries that the doppelgänger may have survived. The doppelgänger awakens. In 1945 New Mexico, the first atomic bomb is detonated. Woodsmen occupy a convenience store and the Experiment spews smoke containing an orb bearing BOB's face. In the building above the purple sea, the Fireman observes these events and levitates, emanating a golden mist and an orb containing Laura Palmer's face. His companion, Señorita Dido, sends the orb to Earth. In 1956 New Mexico, a woodsman descends to the ground, enters a radio station and repeatedly broadcasts a mysterious message, rendering listeners unconscious. A bug/frog-like creature hatches from an egg, enters an unconscious girl's room and climbs down her throat.

Cooper's doppelgänger meets hitmen Hutch and Chantal at a farm and orders them to kill Warden Murphy. He sends a text to Diane and calls Todd to ask if he has done 'it' yet. Dougie's boss says that Dougie sometimes has episodes due to a car accident. The Las Vegas police discover no record of Dougie Jones before 1997 and take fingerprints and DNA from his coffee mug. Ike leaves a phone message for a 'JT' and is arrested. Bobby visits his mother with Frank and Hawk to ask about Cooper; her husband Major Briggs long ago foretold their arrival, and she gives them a cylinder containing a location, date, and Cooper's name written twice. The FBI stops in Buckhorn to examine the corpse with Major Briggs's fingerprints. Hastings tells Tammy that he and Ruth visited Briggs in another dimension, where he had been 'hibernating' for years, and witnessed his beheading as he was saying 'Cooper, Cooper'. Johnny Horne injures himself, and Jerry Horne hallucinates that his foot is talking.

He attacks her and leaves her for dead in her trailer, then has Deputy Chad intercept the letter. The Mitchums see a news story about Ike's arrest, and recognize Cooper as 'Mr. Jackpots'. Janey-E notices that her husband's physique has improved and has sex with him. Nadine Hurley watches Jacoby's latest broadcast from her drapery store. Richard attacks his grandmother Sylvia in her home and robs her. She calls Ben and demands money from him. Todd orders Anthony Sinclair to frame Dougie for the denial of an arson insurance claim that lost the Mitchums $30 million. Gordon has a vision of Laura. Albert informs him that the FBI has intercepted a text message from Diane informing someone of Hastings's arrest. Tammy shows them a photo that links Cooper's doppelgänger with the glass box in New York. Hawk receives another call from the Log Lady, who tells him 'Laura is the one.'

A group of children discover Miriam crawling from the underbrush. Becky learns Steven has been cheating on her with Gersten Hayward. She drives to Gersten's apartment and shoots through the door, but the couple are elsewhere. At the Double R Diner, Becky's parents, Shelly and Bobby, discuss the incident with her. Red arrives and Shelly leaves to kiss him. A child fires a gun through the diner window, causing a commotion. At the location where Hastings met Major Briggs, the FBI finds Ruth's body with coordinates written on one arm. Gordon sees woodsmen in a vortex and is drawn back by Albert. One of the woodsmen sneaks up on Hastings and kills him. While Hawk and Frank study an ancient map, the Log Lady calls Hawk and tells him 'There's fire where you are going.' Dougie's boss sends Cooper to give the Mitchums a $30 million check after realizing their claim is legitimate. The Mitchums plan to kill Cooper, but after Bradley has a prophetic dream, they decide he is not their enemy and take him for drinks, where Cooper reacts to the words 'damn good' while eating cherry pie.

Gordon and Albert recruit Tammy and deputize Diane to the Blue Rose task force. Sarah Palmer has an unsettling experience in a grocery store, which leads Deputy Chief Hawk to check on her at her house, where he hears a sound behind Sarah. Albert interrupts Gordon and his French lady friend to show him a text message Diane received asking about Las Vegas. Audrey Horne demands that her husband, Charlie, help her find Billy, her missing lover. He reluctantly phones Tina, and is astonished by what she tells him, but does not tell Audrey what Tina said. Chantal and Hutch assassinate Warden Murphy. Frank visits Ben Horne to tell him his grandson Richard killed the boy in the hit-and-run, and attempted to kill the only witness. Ben agrees to pay her medical costs and gives Cooper's old room key to Frank as a memento for Harry. Diane finds that the coordinates on Ruth Davenport's arm point to Twin Peaks.

The Mitchums thank Dougie and Bushnell with gifts. Anthony Sinclair is about to poison Dougie, but relents and confesses his collusion with Todd to Bushnell. The Las Vegas police dismiss Dougie's fingerprint analysis. Cooper's doppelgänger arrives in Montana, where Ray is with a gang. The doppelgänger defeats the gang leader in an arm-wrestling match, then kills him, with the gang (including Richard) watching. He questions Ray about the assassination attempt, forces him to give up the coordinates, and shoots him, sending him to the Black Lodge. Hutch and Chantal drive through Utah. At the RR, Big Ed and Bobby have dinner while Norma meets Walter, who helped franchise her business. Nadine and Jacoby meet for the first time in years. Sarah watches a loop of a boxing match. Audrey tells Charlie she does not know who or where she is and cannot leave the house. James, performing at the Roadhouse, moves Renee to tears.

Frank informs Gordon that pages found from Laura's diary suggest two Coopers. Albert tells Tammy about the first Blue Rose case, which involved doppelgängers. Diane identifies Janey-E as her estranged half-sister. Gordon orders the Las Vegas office to search for the Joneses. Chad is arrested. Frank, Hawk, Bobby and Andy follow Major Briggs's instructions to 'Jack Rabbit's Palace' in the woods, where they find a naked Naido. Andy is transported to the Fireman, who shows him visions of the events in New Mexico, Laura, two Coopers, Lucy and an electrical pole numbered 6. For her safety the police place Naido in a cell in the Sheriff's department, next to cells containing Chad and a drunk bleeding from his face. James learns how fellow Great Northern security guard Freddie Sykes bought a strength-enhancing glove and moved to Twin Peaks from London after a vision of the Fireman. James notices a hum in the boiler room. When a trucker insults her in a bar, Sarah opens her face, revealing darkness, and bites his throat, killing him. Cooper's doppelgänger arrives at the convenience store to ask Jeffries (whose voice comes from a machine) about the assassination attempt and his reference to 'Judy'. Jeffries tells him he has already met Judy and gives him coordinates. Outside, Richard attacks the doppelgänger, whom he recognized as an FBI agent his mother Audrey knew, but is subdued. In Las Vegas, Chantal assassinates Todd and his assistant. Cooper reacts to hearing Gordon's name on TV (in Sunset Boulevard), and sticks a fork into an electrical socket. Inspired by Jacoby's show, Nadine tells Ed he is free to pursue Norma. Norma lets Walter buy out the RR franchise, then accepts Ed's marriage proposal. Gersten attempts to console an armed, suicidal Steven in the woods; hiding from a passerby, she hears a gunshot. The Log Lady calls Hawk and gives him a final message before dying. Audrey and Charlie continue arguing. At the Roadhouse, James is attacked by Renee's jealous husband, Chuck, whom Freddie punches out with his glove; Freddie and James are arrested. Cooper's doppelgänger and Richard Horne follow two of three coordinates the doppelgänger obtained. Observed by Jerry Horne, the doppelgänger sends Richard ahead to the site, where he is electrocuted, and then calls Richard his son. While Cooper lies in a coma, both the FBI and Chantal and Hutch are waiting outside the Jones residence. Chantal and Hutch are killed by a neighbor they provoked in a parking dispute. Cooper awakes from his coma. MIKE tells him that the doppelgänger is still at large and gives him the Owl Cave ring. Cooper gives MIKE some of his hair, asking him to make another tulpa, then has the Mitchums organize a flight to Spokane, Washington. Having received a text from the doppelgänger, Diane tells the task force that, years ago, Cooper raped her and took her to an old gas station. Exclaiming 'I'm in the sheriff's station.. I'm not me', she pulls a gun but is shot by Albert and Tammy. Diane is drawn to the Black Lodge and dissolves into a seed. Tammy realizes that the 'Diane' they had been associating with is actually a tulpa. At the Roadhouse, Audrey dances to 'Audrey's Dance'. When a fight breaks out, Audrey begs Charlie to take her home. Gordon tells Albert of a secret plan to find 'Judy', an 'extreme negative force' originally known as 'Jowday', and is informed that Cooper is headed for Twin Peaks. The remaining coordinates lead Cooper's doppelgänger to 'Jack Rabbit's Palace'. He is transported to the Fireman, then to the Sheriff's Department, and mistaken for the real Cooper. While talking to the doppelgänger, Frank receives a call from Cooper. The doppelgänger draws a gun but is shot by Lucy. Cooper, the FBI and the Mitchums arrive. Woodsmen tear at the doppelgänger's body, releasing BOB's orb. Freddie knocks out Chad, who had escaped his cell, and smashes BOB's orb with several punches. Cooper puts the Owl Cave ring on the doppelgänger's finger, sending him to the Black Lodge. Naido transforms into Diane. Cooper unlocks a door at the Great Northern, where MIKE takes him to Jeffries, who transports Cooper to the night Laura died. Cooper prevents Laura's murder; in the morning, her corpse vanishes. As he leads her through the woods, she disappears and a woman's scream is heard. In Sarah's house, Sarah smashes Laura's photo, though the photograph itself cannot be torn.

Cooper's doppelgänger burns in the Black Lodge. MIKE creates another Dougie, who returns to Janey-E and Sonny Jim. Cooper appears in the Black Lodge again, encountering MIKE and the Arm. He emerges and meets Diane in the woods. They drive on a highway for 430 miles and 'cross over' an electrical field, then drive to a motel and have sex. Cooper wakes the next morning alone and finds a note left to 'Richard' from 'Linda'. Arriving at Judy's Diner in Odessa, Texas, Cooper saves a waitress from harassment and obtains the address of another waitress, Carrie Page, who resembles Laura Palmer. Believing she is Laura, he drives her to Twin Peaks, but finds the Palmer house occupied by different owners. Confused, Cooper asks Carrie what year it is. Carrie hears Sarah calling Laura's name and screams. The house lights go out. The season closes with a visual callback to Laura whispering to Cooper in the Red Room.

Response[edit]

Release[edit]

Season 3 intertitle.

The season premiered on Showtime on May 21, 2017, with a two-hour episode.[1] After the airing, the premiere and an additional two episodes became available online, and the season aired in weekly increments from that point onwards (at Lynch's insistence). Overall, the series consists of 18 episodes.[1] It concluded on September 3, 2017, with a two-part finale.[98]

In the United Kingdom, Sky Atlanticsimulcast the first two episodes beginning at 2:00 am British Summer Time on May 22, 2017,[99] and the next two episodes were released on Sky UK's on-demand service after the premiere.[100] In the Nordic countries, the season is broadcast on HBO Nordic, with the two-hour premiere airing on May 22, and subsequent episodes being made available the day after its U.S. airing.[101] In Canada, the season is available on CraveTV and The Movie Network, and debuted simultaneously with the U.S. broadcast.[102][103] In Australia, episodes of the season are available to stream on Stan the same day as the original U.S. broadcast.[104] In Japan, the season aired on the satellite television network Wowow, which also aired the original series.[105]

Two episodes were screened at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.[106]The Return was screened in its entirety from January 5–7, 2018, at the Museum of Modern Art, as part of the museum's annual series on 'the year's finest films'.[107]

Critical reception[edit]

On Rotten Tomatoes the season has a 94% rating with an average score of 7.83 out of 10 based on 91 reviews. The site's critical consensus reads, 'Surreal, suspenseful, and visually stunning, this new Twin Peaks is an auteurist triumph for David Lynch.'[7] On Metacritic, Twin Peaks has a score of 74 out of 100 based on 26 reviews.[108]

Sean T. Collins of Rolling Stone called the season 'one of the most groundbreaking TV series ever', praising its original, complex storylines and the performances of its cast, particularly Kyle MacLachlan.[109]Matt Zoller Seitz of Vulture wrote that the show was 'the most original and disturbing to hit TV drama since The Sopranos'.[110] In his season review for IGN, Matt Fowler noted that Twin Peaks 'came back as a true artistic force that challenged just about every storytelling convention we know' and scored it an 8.8 out of 10.[111]

Of the season's two-part premiere, Sonia Saraiya of Variety wrote 'Twin Peaks: The Return is weird and creepy and slow. But it is interesting. The show is very stubbornly itself—not quite film and not quite TV, rejecting both standard storytelling and standard forms. It's not especially fun to watch and it can be quite disturbing. But there is never a sense that you are watching something devoid of vision or intention. Lynch's vision is so total and absolute that he can get away with what wouldn't be otherwise acceptable.'[112]

The Hollywood Reporter's Daniel Fienberg wrote of the season's format, 'It's obvious this Twin Peaks is going to be an 18-hour unit. There was no discernible separation between hours and if credits hadn't rolled, the second hour could probably just as easily have flowed into the third. This isn't episodic TV. It's another thing.'[113]

In her 'A' grade review of the premiere, Emily L. Stephens of The A.V. Club wrote of its possible reception by critics and viewers, 'If you were looking forward to a return of the sometimes campy, sometimes cozy humor of the original two seasons of Twin Peaks, this premiere could come as a shock. If you were anticipating that once jolting, now familiar blend of genres, this is.. not that.' She called the two-part premiere 'pure Lynchian horror'.[114]

Lynch screened the two-hour premiere of the season at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and received a five-minute standing ovation from the crowd.[115]

Sight & Sound and Cahiers du cinéma magazines named Twin Peaks: The Return respectively as the second-best and the best 'film' of the year, with Sight & Sound placing it behind only the psychological horror film Get Out.[10][11]Metacritic ranked Twin Peaks the second-best TV series of 2017; 20 major publications ranked it the best show of the year.[8]

Critics' top ten lists[edit]

[116]

Viewership for the premiere increased to 804,000 in Live+3 ratings, and it had a viewership of 1.7 million across streaming and on-demand platforms.[117] Showtime announced that the weekend of the Twin Peaks premiere had the most signups to their streaming service ever.[118] Prior to the finale, the season was averaging 2 million weekly viewers, when including time-shifting, encores and streaming. Showtime president David Nevins said that Twin Peaks 'has exceeded expectations' from a financial perspective.[119]

Home media[edit]

The season was released on Blu-ray and DVD on December 5, 2017, under the title Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series. The set includes more than six hours of behind-the-scenes content.[130]

In the 2017 Home Media Awards, which honor the year's best home video releases, Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series won four awards: Title of the Year, TV on Disc of the Year, Best TV Movie or Miniseries, and Best Extras/Bonus Material.[131]

Future[edit]

Both David Lynch and Mark Frost have expressed interest in making another season of Twin Peaks, but Lynch has noted that such a project will not immediately follow The Return, given that it took them four and a half years to write and film the third season.[132][133] In June 2018, Lynch said specifically of continuing the character Carrie Page's story that 'it is calling, but there are a lot of disturbances'.[134]

Plot[edit]

The stars turn and a time presents itself.

— Margaret Lanterman (used as a promotional tagline for the episode)

Background[edit]

The small town of Twin Peaks, Washington, has been shocked by the murder of schoolgirl Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) and the attempted murder of her friend Ronette Pulaski (Phoebe Augustine). FBI special agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) has been sent to the town to investigate[3] and has come to the realization that the killer was Laura's father, Leland Palmer (Ray Wise), who acted while possessed by a demonic entity, Killer BOB (Frank Silva).[4] At the end of the original series, BOB trapped Cooper in the Black Lodge, an extra-dimensional place, and let out Cooper's doppelgänger to use him for physical access to the world.[5] 25 years later, Cooper's doppelgänger (now known among associates as Mr. C or simply Cooper) roams freely through the world, with Cooper seemingly still inside the Lodges' world.[6] Meanwhile, in New York City, Sam Colby (Benjamin Rosenfield) is tasked with the responsibility to observe a glass cube; when he brings inside Tracey Barberato (Madeline Zima) and the two start having sex, however, a creature, the Experiment Model (Erica Aynon), appears in the glass box and breaks out of it, slaughtering the two of them. In Buckhorn, South Dakota, school principal William Hastings (Matthew Lillard) is accused of murdering Ruth Davenport (Mary Stofle), the school librarian, much to the chagrin of his wife Phyllis (Cornelia Guest) .

Events[edit]

In Buckhorn, Bill Hastings sits inside his cell, seemingly anxious. Detective Dave Macklay (Brent Briscoe) accompanies Bill's wife Phyllis in the cell, warning them that the visit will be short; Bill thanks him. Phyllis informs her husband that according to George Bautzer (Neil Dickson), their attorney, he will not be released on bail; Bill insists that he did not kill Ruth Davenport, but he affirms that he dreamt of being there. Phyllis insists that he was there, and reveals that she knew about his affair with the librarian all along; Bill counters that he also knew that she was having an affair with George, and possibly someone else. She taunts him with the perspective of a life in prison; Detective Macklay comes to dismiss Phyllis, leaving Bill in his despair. In the station's entrance, Phyllis meets George and informs him that Bill is aware of their affair, subsequently instructing him not to walk her out and to meet her later at her place; George then discusses with Detective Maklay about how Bill and Phyllis feel. Two cells away from Bill, a dark figure[n 1] (Stewart Strauss[n 2][7]) sits on the bed and disappears, leaving only its head to float upwards. Phyllis returns home; in the living room she finds Mr. C, who comments that she followed human nature perfectly and shoots her with George's gun, which he then drops.

In Las Vegas, Nevada, Duncan Todd (Patrick Fischler) calls Roger (Joe Adler) in his office; after handing him money, he instructs him to tell 'her'[8] that she has the job. Roger asks Todd why he lets 'him' do 'these things,' to which Todd replies that Roger better not get involved with people like 'him'.[8] In a restaurant, Mr. C eats creamed corn with Darya (Nicole LaLiberte), Ray (George Griffith) and Jack (Steve Baker). Ray ironically remarks that Jack barely touched his 'three dinners';[8] he then proceeds to discuss the plan for the future days with Mr. C, who states that he'll need to be on his own for a while. Finally, Ray reassures that he will get the information Mr. C needs from Betty, Bill Hastings' secretary; Mr. C remarks that he doesn't need the information, but wants it. In the Ghostwood forest, Hawk (Michael Horse) searches through the woods with a flashlights. He receives a call from the Margaret Lanterman (Catherine Coulson), who asks him where is he walking. When Hawk replies that something is supposed to happen there, Margaret states that 'the stars turn and the time presents itself,'[8] and recommends Hawk to be careful, subsequently inviting him for coffee and pie at her house. Hawk thanks her and promises to tell her what happens, then closes the call; he arrives to Glastonbury Grove, where red curtains faintly appear and disappear.

Cooper sits in the Red Room. MIKE (Al Strobel) asks him whether 'is it future or is it past,'[8] then tells him that someone is there and disappears. Laura Palmer enters and sits in one of the chairs. She salutes Cooper, informs him that he can go now and asks him if he can recognize her. In an almost verbatim re-enactment of his dream, Cooper asks Laura if she is Laura Palmer, to which she replies 'I feel like I know her, but sometimes my arms bend backwards.'[8] When Cooper asks specifically who she is, however, she confirms that she is Laura Palmer, and when he replies that she is dead she states 'I am dead yet I live.'[8] She removes her face, revealing a pulsating white light, and closes it back. Cooper asks when he can go; in another repetition of Cooper's dream Laura walks over to him, kisses him and whispers in his ear.[n 3] When Laura finishes she pulls back; an unseen force moves the curtains and Laura screams before being pulled away in front of Cooper. The curtains billow and take off, revealing a pale horse standing on the seemingly endless chevron floor and darkness. MIKE reappears and asks Cooper again whether 'is it future or is it past;'[8] he then leads Cooper in another room, where he presents him to 'the evolution of the arm', a flashing bare tree with a lump of flesh on its top.[n 4] Repeating the lines he once told Cooper, the arm states 'I am the arm and I sound like this',[8] followed by a looping sound. He asks Cooper if he remember his doppelgänger, and states that the doppelgänger must come in in order for Cooper to go out.

Jack closes a garage door with one of Cooper's doppelgänger's cars inside, and hands Mr. C the keys for another car. Before leaving, Mr. C calls Jack to him, grabs his face and strokes it. He goes to a motel, where Darya quickly hangs up the phone and tells him that she was talking to Jack to ensure that the job is done 'on the secretary's car';[8] she tells him that she's happy to see him. Mr. C tells her that Ray never showed up to their meeting, and that he might borrow her gun for a job. He lays next to her and hugs her; he then tells her that he killed Jack after discovering that he wired the car. Darya tries to escape, but Mr. C smashes her head against the headboard of the bed; he proceeds to play a recording of her phone conversation with Ray, where the two discuss about his imprisonment in a Federal Prison in South Dakota for interstate transportations of firearms and their task to assassinate Mr. C, which was assigned to them by a man named Jeffries and which was now entrusted entirely upon her. Darya tries to escape once again, and Mr. C smashes her head against the headboard thrice. She asks him whether he's going to kill her, to which he responds affirmatively; Darya tries to escape one more time, after which Mr. C punches her in the face. He asks her to reveal the name of the man who paid for his assassination, which Darya does not know, but whom, she discloses, paid $500,000 to split between her and Ray. She states that she wouldn't have done it, but Mr. C brushes this off. He then discloses that the following day he is supposed to be pulled back in a place called 'Black Lodge', but that he has a plan for that. He asks her if she received any information from Ray, stating that a set of coordinates and numbers may save her life; Darya did not receive any information, although she knows that Hasting's secretary did reveal something to Ray. Mr. C pulls out an ace of spades card from his jacket, with a head equipped with antennas scribbled at its center, and tells Darya that is what he wants. Darya asks again whether he will kill her, which he answers affirmatively once again; after another futile attempt to escape, he shoots her after covering her face with a pillow.

After the assassination, Mr. C washes his hands. He contacts the man he believes to be Phillip Jeffries,[n 5] and the voice on the other end of the phone states to have missed him in New York and that the doppelgänger is still in Buckhorn. He then asks whether Mr. C met Major Briggs, much to the doppelgänger's astonishment. The voice then says that he just called to say goodbye, and that the doppelgänger is 'going back in'[8] the following day so that he will be with BOB again, then disconnects. Mr. C opens up a portable laptop, and logs into an FBI database to download files relative to the Yankton Federal Prison, where Ray claims to be. He leaves the room and enters into the next one, where Chantal Hutchens (Jennifer Jason Leigh) stays. He orders her to clean up his room; gathering that he killed Darya, Chantal states that it is a good thing, since she started to be jealous of her. Mr. C tells her that he needs her and her husband to be in a specific location in the following days; he then calls her to him, opens her bathrobe and touches her groin area, stating that she is 'nice and wet'.[8]

In the Black Lodge the arm states '253. Time and time again.'[8] It repeats BOB's name three times, then orders Cooper to go twice. Cooper follows MIKE in a hallway; when he is in, MIKE disappears. Cooper proceed to another entrance, but he finds it blocked; he walks back in the room he came from, which is now empty, and crosses it to the other side. He finds himself in another hallway, which leads him to a room where Leland Palmer sits; he tells Cooper to 'find Laura.'[8] Cooper is attracted by a shining light into another room, which seemingly distorts itself on two overlapping levels, one moving towards the curtains on the opposite side and one moving from them; he then has a vision of a Venus of Arles statue. MIKE senses that something is wrong, and the arm states that it's his doppelgänger. From the room, Cooper walks into another hallway, where he sees the Venus of Arles statue; he opens the entrance next to it, and from it he sees his doppelgänger driving on a road in South Dakota. The statue morphs in the doppelgänger of the arm, identical to him except for the yellow color of the lump of flesh on its top; the stripes forming the chevron pattern of the floor begin to move upwards and downwards under Cooper's feet, and, as the doppelgänger screams 'non-exist-ent,'[8] they open up horizontally, causing Cooper to fall into a black liquid. Cooper is transported on the exterior Glass Box in New York City, and is sucked inside; he floats through a tube and inside the internal glass box. Sam Colby checks the bathroom for the guard, but it's empty; he decides to let Tracey Barberato in. As they are about to walk in, the box trembles and repeatedly creates inside itself a series of matrioska-like copies of its insides, back and forth, until Cooper disappears. He proceeds to fall through space.

Inside the Palmer House, Sarah Palmer (Grace Zabriskie) watches footage of a pack of lions killing an African buffalo.[n 6] At the Roadhouse, the band Chromatics (Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, Johnny Jewel, Nat Walker) performs their song 'Shadow'. Shelly (Mädchen Amick) takes a tequila shot with her friends Hannah (Gia Carides) and Renee (Jessica Szohr); she goes on to discuss about how Steven is not the right husband for her daughter Becky. When James Hurley (James Marshall) enters the Roadhouse with his friend Freddie Sykes (Jake Wardle), the group comments on the fact that he might like Renee, with Shelly stating that there's nothing wrong with James, that he had a motorcycle accident and that 'James was always cool.'[8] From the bar counter, Red (Balthazar Getty) winks at Shelly, while Jean-Michel Renault (Walter Olkewicz) serves drinks to the patrons.

Production[edit]

'Part 2', like the rest of the limited series, was written by Mark Frost and David Lynch and directed by Lynch himself.[9] Frost had already written ten episodes of the original series — the 'Pilot' and Episodes 1, 2 and 8 with Lynch, plus Episodes 5, 7, 12, 14, 16, 26 and the original series finale, Episode 29. Lynch also directed six episodes of the original series — the 'Pilot', 'Episode 2', 'Episode 8', 'Episode 9', 'Episode 14' and 'Episode 29'.[10] The episode is dedicated to the memory of Frank Silva, who appears through archive footage in this episode.[n 7]

Music[edit]

Almost every episode of the 2017 Twin Peaks series featured a live performance by various bands at the Roadhouse. In this episode the American electronic music band Chromatics performing their song 'Shadow'. Additionally, several sped-up fragments of David Lynch's song 'Last Call' from his 2013 album The Big Dream are hidden during the scene in the Palmer house.[11]

Reception[edit]

Broadcast[edit]

'Part 2' was originally broadcast on the Showtime network together with Part 1 on May 22, 2017. The initial broadcast was watched by 506,000 viewers in the United States,[1] a low number by the standards of premium cable networks. But subsequent data from Showtime estimates that in the first three days after the premiere around 1.7 million viewers watched the episode, including 298,000 from DVR viewings and viewers from various streaming platforms.[12] Although 'Part 2' was not rated upon its Showtime broadcast, a TV-14 edit of the episode was uploaded on the official Twin PeaksYouTube channel for a brief period in June 2017 (on the occasion of National Doughnut Day);[13] the same edit was uploaded again on August 8, 2017.[14]

Critical reception[edit]

'Part 2' received critical acclaim. On Rotten Tomatoes, the episode received a 100% rating with an average score of 8.19 out of 10 based on 26 reviews.[15] The critics' consensus reads, 'Part Two' delivers all the addictively, terrifyingly inscrutable storytelling that Twin Peaks fans and David Lynch devotees could hope for.'[15] Writing for IndieWire, Liz Shannon Miller gave the episode a B+, expressing disappointment at the 'pretty staggering' violence against women in both this episode and Part 1, particularly defining Darya's death as 'an excruciatingly painful sequence'; however, she praised the show as 'fascinating in our current era of revivals, because it eschews all the conventions used by other series'. She went on to praise Kyle MacLachlan's performance as 'impressive', extending the praise to the rest of the cast in the light of the 'insane' circumstances they worked under ('all actors were only given their own lines, and no knowledge of the full story'). Ultimately, she called the premiere 'plenty watchable', but added that 'there are a few elements that don't go down as easy as damn good coffee.'[16]

Twin Peaks

The New York Times' James Poniewozik gave the episode a positive review, praising Lynch's visual imagination as 'inimitable' and likening the episode to the glass box it features while also drawing comparisons to Lost, Fargo and True Detective. Poniewozik wrote, '[t]he original Twin Peaks was powered by two questions: 'Who killed Laura Palmer?' and 'What the hell am I watching?', and that while '[t]he reincarnation doesn't have the first', 'it still knows how to get you to ask the second'.[17] In his recap for Entertainment Weekly, Jeff Jensen also gave Part 2 a B+, criticizing the episode's 'absence of certain conventions that even that unconventional pilot possessed' while also praising the episode's scope and Glass Box subplot, ultimately calling himself as 'engaged' by the series.[18]

In her positive review of the episode, The A.V. Club's Emily L. Stephens gave the episode an A, writing that the 'comfort' of the original Twin Peaks is 'entirely eschewed', praising the Glass Box subplot as 'a remark upon the creation and the consumption of television and film' and calling the episode an 'unfiltered Lynchian vision, unfettered from the structures of soap operas, police procedurals, or thrillers that gave shape to the first few original outings into Twin Peaks.'[19]

Notes[edit]

  1. ^Eventually, the dark figures will be identified during Part 8 as the Woodsmen.
  2. ^Strauss is uncredited in the episode.
  3. ^A female voice can be faintly heard saying 'Whisper' as Laura leans onto Cooper.
  4. ^The original actor for the arm, Michael J. Anderson, did not return to the role. The voice actor for the arm is uncredited.
  5. ^The voice actor for the Phillip Jeffries is uncredited in this episode; in the rest of the season, Phillip Jeffries is voiced by Nathan Frizzel, whose voice sounds conspicuously different from this episode. Consequently, many consider the character speaking on the phone to be a different character from the original Jeffries, possibly an impostor.
  6. ^Similarly to an analogous accident in the Pilot, it is possible to spot a hand holding a camera in the mirrors behind Sarah Palmer.
  7. ^In the original broadcast with Part 1, Part 2 was also dedicated to Margaret Coulson; once the episodes were split, the dedication to Coulson switched to the credits of the first episode, as she appeared there earlier.
