This is a discussion on How to find out age of my 10 22? within the Ruger 10/22 Rimfire forums, part of the Rifle & Shotgun Forum category; I am just wandering if there is a certain web site I can run serial numbers of a 10 22 to find out when it ..

I emailed Ruger with the Serial and they came back with a ship date of September 1967. It's great that they can provide info like that. Ruger does not necessarily produce firearms in serial number order. There are occasions when blocks of serial numbers have been manufactured out of sequence, sometimes years later. Also, within a model family the same serial number prefix may be used to produce a variety of different models, all in the same block of serial numbers.

Thank you both very much!! Its kinda weird though..on the list it shows the first 3 numbers 124 as 1984 and 126 as 1985..but my first 3 are 125. Does that make sense??

Wildcatman .. As I read the code, it would likely make your 10/22 a later 1984 manufacture. If you want a more accurate date, just give Ruger a call

It simply means that during that time, they finished the 124 prefix, went through the 125 prefix and had begun the 126 prefix.

Howdy:
When calling the Records tellie number, the Ladies will give you the month & year it left the factory.. Don't be to saprized to find that the numbers don't go in order, as Ruger jumps around a lot with them, as they explained it to me.
I bought a brand spanken new Model 96 lever action 22Mag, still sealed in the box & everything.. I called the number & the date it left the factory made it 3 years old (most likely laid around in a warehouse some place).. But my buddy ordered one at the exact same time as I & his numbers were much earlier than mine.. But left the factory just 2 months before he made the purchase..
So go figure! Just call me somewhat confused!
So I wrote asking the same questions, & the responce was that they take a block of numbers & hold them for a run that will be made...Seems kinda odd to me, but if it works for them I am happy!
Anyway I hope some of this helps!
Collect on!
Peace !

That's odd. The Model 10-8 wasn't introduced until 1977 according to the book ..

A lot of time, at least with Ruger I know, they'd make runs of particular models and then warehouse them. If orders didn't come in for them, they sat. They'd get inventoried each yr but just passed over. A while back, they cleaned house so to speak and shipped a LOT of long discontinued models. Some had sat for 10 years. New production methods eliminate that now.

Thanks for the info.
Looked up my 10 22, & came in the ball park of 1997 or 98,
just looking at the casting mark inside & it has 97 on it? but that just a perchance!
I think the castings were made in Bulk lot's & later put together??
just my 2 cents.
