I don't claim to be an expert, but all of the Remington 'Model 11' 12 guage shotguns that I've ever seen or heard of that have six digit serial numbers located on the bottom of the receiver have been very early guns; I think some of them and maybe all of them that I've seen were made even before the gun was called the Model 11. (From 1905 until 1911 the Browning patent automatic shotgun that Remington made was simply called the Remington Autoloading Shotgun. It didn't become the Model 11 until 1911.) All of the very early guns like this that I've seen do not have the flying duck and flying pheasant rollmarks on the receiver like the later Model 11's have, and they do not have Model 11 rollmarked onto the breechbolt like the later Model 11's do. The barrels of all the real early ones that I've seen have been plain to the point that nobody has been able to tell if they were actually original to the gun, or were added to the gun later, because none identified Remington as the manufacturer. In fact, the real early Remington autoloaders that I've seen have often been confused with early Browning A-5's because they did not say Remington on the barrel. Why not post a few pictures of your gun showing all these features? I'd sure like to see it. I love the old Remingtons humpbacks, regardless whether they are pre-model 11s or are Model 11s.

Feb 03, 2016  And at least Remington seems to have changed the serial number prefixes & suffixes at the same time, so we can easily work out whether or not the serial number. Rem-Rand Serial Numbers Data from Remington Rand Corporation Records of Advertising and Sales Promotion archived at Hagley Museum and Library Appendix I Typewriter Manufacture Dates and Serial Numbers. Remington Year of Manufacture Codes maybe found on the barrel of your Remington rifle [or shotgun] on the left side, just forward of the receiver; the first letter of the Code is the month of manufacture, followed by one or two letters which are the year of manufacture. Jan 13, 2015  Remington Model 11 12ga Age? And would like to figure out the year of it's birth so to speak. I found the chart on Remington's page, but the serial number does not start with letters, so not sure what that's about. It is a 6 digit number on the underside of the action. But all of the Remington 'Model 11' 12 guage shotguns that I've.

Greetings from Norway!
Where can i find out how old my remington 11 is? Serialnumber is 166693.
I got this gun for free, and after stripping it down, i can see why. It is well used, and two small pieces of the bolt has chipped off. I shot 10 rounds with it first thing, so it does still work. Here are some pics:
Maybe not beautiful, but everyone loves their own children:)
Bolt viewed from top, chipping at right part of photo.
It seems to function despite of damage.
Safety indicate a pre 1928 model?
Proof of quality stamped at tang.
Hunting license from North Dakota hidden beneath recoil pad indicating a pre 1924 model.

The old plant ledger available on the Remington Society of America web site begins with serial number 199611 on 30 September 1919, so your gun is likely from the mid-teens. This John M. Browning designed shotgun was introduced in 1905 as the Remington Autoloading Gun when the company name was Remington Arms Co. In 1911 when Marcellus Hartley Dodge combined his two companies as Remington Arms-Union Metallic Cartridge Co. they began referring to the gun as the Model No. 11. In 1920 the company name was changed again to Remington Arms Co., Inc.

Your gun was made in 1914. I assume it is a 12 ga.

Great looking gun. I bought one almost identical to it last summer for $150 US. Mine has the serial number 162###. It's been refinished but I don't mind. Mine has the same safety and the same solid rib. I've not shot mine a lot yet. Just a round a skeet and a round of trap with it. It hits targets very hard and works quite well for me.
Remroc1, I'd be curious to know what year it was manufactured as well as your sorce for that information.
Being a Remington fan I bought it more our of curiousity and as a 'Wall Hanger' but it sure is fun to be able to shoot it a bit as well. I have Remington model 1900 that is probably less then 10 years older then my Model 11 that it makes a good match to.

I got my gun for free from guy who needed a license for a new Franchi predator. Its hard to get license for more than one shotgun in city areas, especially if both are semiauto. Someone has tried to refinish it, without good luck.
I understand its supposed to be a leather buffer or something similar behing the bolt. Is this cruicial? I couldt find any trace of any in mine, just a 100 years worth of rust and unidentified gunk. Cleaned it all out with remington super lube. Now it only look 50 years old.

Mine is SN 75916, Remington (Browning patent), Model 11 (or maybe the original AUTO 5);
It has the orig. UMC foundry markings on it, and doesn't have any of the military markings on it.
It's one of the meanest, baddest, and most enduring shotguns ever made; It's so good, that The
gun has come back;
If you have one, KEEP IT!!

Unlike the Browning, FN or Miroku, A5, the Remington M11 has a leather buffer in the back of the receiver. Due to the age of your gun, it probably should be checked or replaced by a good gunsmith.
