The AAXA LED Android Projector ($499) is a portable mini-projector that packs in a lot of features, most prominently a built-in Android operating system. It's capable of projecting Android apps and games at a much larger size than you can get on your phone or tablet. Although its video and photo quality are underwhelming, it has goodd find doing so with this projector preferable to viewing Android content on a tablet or phone.
Of Mice and Menus
You can navigate the projector's menus with the tiny IR remote that's provided, enabling it as a mouse pointer by clicking a mouse-icon button twice. You can then use the remote's arrow keys to move the cursor. When using the remote as a mouse, the cursor's motion is slow; it took about 8 seconds for the cursor to move horizontally across the whole screen. A better choice is to hook a USB mouse to the LED Android's USB port. This is not a projector that you're likely to figure out how to fully use on your own. The LED Android contains three different menus systems: Main, OSD (for on-screen display), and Android. Only the existence of the Main menu, accessible through the Menu button on the remote, is obvious. You access the OSD menu by pressing the Settings button on the remote or projector, identified with a gear icon. Finally, there's the Android menu, accessible by clicking the Apps button on the main menu and then the Settings app.
In this game, you have been finally granted a trainer’s license, and now it’s your time to head out to the world and be the next Poke League Champion! Pokemon Blue (and Pokemon Red) is a 1996 (1998 for English) RPG game and among the very first Pokemon titles in the series along with Red, Green, and Yellow. In Blue version you can catch a wild Growlithe!
From the Main menu you can run music, video, images, and apps, as well as change settings. Along the bottom of the screen are quick-launch buttons for five services: Facebook, Hulu, Netflix, Google, and YouTube. By clicking on any of them, you are taken to the service's website; from the Facebook site, for instance, you are given the option of downloading the Facebook app from Google Play, which I did.
The projector has built-in Wi-Fi, accessible through the Main menu's Settings submenu. After you turn it on, you're presented with a list of available networks. Once you select one, you enter the password from a virtual keyboard, and you'll be connected. The network and password will be saved in your system to facilitate reconnecting. Entering the password is one situation in which you'll quickly realize the need for a mouse, and preferably a physical one, rather than using the projector's remote as such.
The OSD menu lets you change Input, Brightness, and Picture settings, including Color Temperature, Display Mode, Aspect Ratio, and Keystone. The Android menu gives you a standard suite of Android settings, including connectivity sources, available Wi-Fi networks, audio, available storage, personal settings, app accounts, and more.
Data-Image Testing
The AAXA LED Android projected a 60-inch (diagonal) image on our test screen from about 5 feet away. I noticed some degradation in image quality with the introduction of ambient light. In testing using the DisplayMate suite, the LED Android's image quality was good for a mini-projector, suitable for typical business or classroom presentations. There's some tinting: red in darker grays, and green in light grays; I noticed the least amount of tinting in my test images when the color temperature was set to Medium.
Even though I set my laptop to the projector's native resolution, I saw traces of what seemed to be scaling artifacts (indicating a resolution mismatch between projector and image source). We've noticed the same phenomenon in many LED-based WXGA projectors we've tested, including the Editors' Choice InFocus LightPro IN1146. If it has any effect on data images in a presentation, it's usually in the form of blurred text, but this isn't the case with the LED Android. It shows reasonably sharp type at sizes as small as 9 points for both white text on black and black text on white.
I noticed rainbow artifacts—red-green-blue flashes, especially in bright areas against dark backgrounds—in some data images, as well as in some of the projector's menus. Although they are obvious enough, they shouldn't be an issue in data images with most viewers.
Video Quality
The rainbow effect in video is another matter. Here, it's obvious enough that people sensitive to the effect will likely be distracted by it. Colors are bright and well-saturated, at times to the point of punchiness. Reds often seem exaggerated; this is particularly true of skin tones. Thus, you should limit video to showing short clips with this model.Audio from the LED Android's pair of two-watt speakers is of decent quality and suitable for use in a small room.
This projector offers a Boost mode that increases its brightness from 450 to 550 lumens for up to an hour at a time. In my testing, though, launching Boost mode considerably increased the fan noise, so I am disinclined to use it.
The AAXA LED as an Android Device
The LED Android uses a dual-core ARM processor to run Android 4.2, enabling a user to download and run apps, surf the Web, and more. It's not as easy as using Android on a phone or tablet, although connecting a USB mouse to the projector makes it easier to navigate than using the remote as a mouse. You can change settings from the Android menu, access apps through the Main menu, and download new apps from Google Play (when you're connected via Wi-Fi), which you can access by clicking Apps on the Main menu and then clicking the Google Play icon.I did some ad-hoc testing, using two of the quick-launch shortcut items to view photos (Facebook) and videos (YouTube). With photos, the quality of the projected images is worse than when viewing them on a tablet (like an iPad Air) or laptop. In particular, there is considerable loss of detail in both bright and dark areas. With YouTube clips, I noticed the same issues (rainbow artifacts and poor color balance) as I'd seen in our regular test video.
Having Android built into the projector is a nice convenience for people who can use it, though there are other ways to project Android content. Many recent projectors with Mobile High-Definition Link (MHL)-enabled HDMI ports support projecting from compatible Android devices. A few projectors, such as the Favi J6-LED-Pico Projector with AirPlay and Miracast, can project wirelessly from Miracast-certified Android phones and tablets (such as the Google Nexus 7).
See How We Test ProjectorsIts built-in operating system sets the AAXA LED Android apart from nearly all LED-based projectors, including the Editors' Choice InFocus LightPro IN1146. The LightPro is much brighter at 1,000 lumens and very well rounded, offering better video, good data-image quality, a good port selection, and an even longer bulb life (30,000 hours).
The AAXA LED Android Projector should be useful if you want to project Android apps or other content, whether for entertainment or as part of a presentation. I'd be more enthusiastic about it in that role if its image quality for video and photos were better. But it offers solid data-image quality, a good set of connection choices, and a bulb that should last the lifetime of the projector; the inclusion of Android on top of that is gravy.
Bottom Line: The AAXA LED Android, an LED-based mini-projector offers good quality in data images and a nice selection of ports for its size. And it integrates Android, letting you access apps and the Web, right on the projector.
