This horn has been upgraded by having a Conn 8D bell and a Conn 8D leadpipe custom fitted. This instrument was originally built as a direct rival to the Elkhart Conn 8Ds of the period, and it plays very well. These horns play similarly to Conn 8Ds since they are both large bore Kruspe wrap symphonic double french horns, though the Reynolds usually has a slightly heavier feel, is slightly more sluggish in terms of responsiveness and has a darker tone. The Conn bell and leadpipe help to lighten the horn up, making it feel quicker and more responsive with a brighter tone than is usual for a Reynolds. The valves move well with excellent compression and the slides all move of course. As for the aesthetic condition of this horn, there are a few small dings and pings as well as some areas of light pitting, etching, and scratching throughout. There are two small patches on the first branch. Silver “Mercury Head” dimes have been fitted to the finger buttons for greater player comfort. Since the bell is a Conn 8D bell, the bell engraving reads: “C.G. CONN/ LTD./ U.S.A.” All this is visible in the pictures, and none of it affects the playability of the horn. This horn is not lacquered; therefore fingerprints should be wiped off after use if the player wishes for the horn to stay as shiny as it is now--if they are not wiped off then the horn will develop a lovely patina. This instrument comes with a somewhat worn case and a mouthpiece in good condition. How the horn plays: Full, warm and bright with a smooth and even tone. The horn is open and responsive with a good dynamic range. All registers speak well and play fluidly. The Bb and F side timbre and intonation match well once the horn is properly intonated. The 2J (actually of Olds/Reynolds manufacture) was a 4-valve front-action CC, and the 10J (definitely an Elkhart/Conn-made tuba) was a 3-valve top-action BBb. French Horn Conn 8D - $2500. This is a Conn 8D, a great instrument for the serious French Horn player. Overall, it is in excellent condition. There is some light scratching where the player's left hand holds the instrument (see picture). There were 2 sets of Conn models that had M prefacing the serial number, and this often a source of confusion. Conn started putting 'M' before the serial numbers during the New Wonder II (Chu Berry) line in the 20s. Not all NWIIs have an M in front of the serial number. For those of you who did not get an earlier (June 1994) message, I have copied a list of CONN serial numbers and approximate dates of manufacture. To my knowledge, for 1940 vintage CONN horns you will find the serial number on the thumb valve casing, not under the valve levers as on more recent horns from CONN.
